There used to be a multi-level elevated roadway that ran through this neighborhood. The 1989 earthquake caused serious damage to this roadway, and the local residents rushed to the aid of the people who were trapped in the wreckage. The residents used their own ladders, including some that were rickety and patched with duct tape.
This sculpture commemorates the courage and resourcefulness of these West Oakland residents. | |
