According to Wikipedia, Cazenovia was established in 1794 by John Lincklaen, a Dutch naval officer. The town is named after Theophilus Cazenove, an agent with the land company.
Cazenovia College was founded in 1824 and, from the beginning of its history it was a coeducational college, which is quite a progressive idea for the time. It's now a small independent college that grants bachelor's degrees, and it has a very good reputation.
One of the famous graduates of Cazenovia College was Leland Stanford, the railroad tycoon and politician who went on to found Stanford University, which is my own alma mater.
