visiting the Serpentine Prairie, East Bay Regional Park District
Oakland, California

The exposed rock on this hillside is blue serpentine.

Serpentine (or serpentinite) is the state rock of California. It's very common where I live, and it's usually a blue-green or olive green color. For a long time, I thought that it was jade.

True blue serpentine is much less common, and there aren't many places in the area where you can get a good look at it.
