The miner's lettuce is in bloom at this time of year, and I like these tiny five-petaled flowers.
Claytonia perfoliata is a native plant in the coastal and central valley regions of California. It is edible, and can be eaten raw in salads or cooked like spinach. The miners who settled in California during the Gold Rush relied on it because it's a good source of Vitamin C and helped to prevent scurvy.
I haven't eaten it myself, but I'll try it someday!
