the colors of summer: palm tree and purple-leaf plum tree
I love the contrast between the green in the palm tree's fronds and the deep purple of the plum tree's leaves. The differences in the textures are nice, too.
The winters in Oakland are very mild. We get the occasional dusting of frost, but killing frosts and snow are very rare, especially in the parts of Oakland that are near sea level.
Palm trees that are native to Chile, the Canary Islands, and Mexico generally do very well here. The California fan palm, which is a native of the Joshua Tree desert area in Southern California, also does well in our area if the soil has good drainage.
The purple-leaf plum is native to Europe and Asia. I like seeing plants from such a wide variety of places in the local gardens --- the mixtures can be very beautiful indeed.
