The sea lions at K-Dock at Pier 39.

They started hanging out at K-Dock shortly after the 1989 earthquake, and the Marine Mammal Center advised the staff at Pier 39 to allow the animals to stay. SInce then, the Center and Pier 39 have worked together to ensure the health and well-being of these sea lions, and they have become popular with the tourists.

In July 2010, the Sea Lion Interpretive Program was launched. The naturalists in the program are stationed at the viewing platform from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on weekends and holidays, and they are available to answer questions and provide information about the sea lions at Pier 39.
