We stopped at a kiosk on 7th Street to get some bottled water, and we were amazed to find that there was a Cogswell monument there!
Henry D. Cogswell was a dentist, business tycoon, and temperance crusader who built these monumental drinking fountains all over the United States. He believed that if you drink enough water, you wouldn't want to or need to drink alcohol.
We first became acquainted with him when we found his huge and elaborate tomb in the cemetery that is a short walk from our home in Oakland, California. He was a real character, that's for sure!
