A few California sea lions started arriving at Pier 39 shortly after the Loma Prieta earthquake in 1989 and, by January 1990, a large group had taken over K-Dock. The population ranges from several hundred to more than 1,700 individuals, mostly males.
The local Marine Mammal Center advised the staff at Pier 39 to allow the animals to stay, and I'm glad that there's a place for them here. I enjoy visiting them for a few minutes whenever I'm in the area. | |
