Stop #11: the Coast Huckleberry (Vaccinium ovatum)

We're "in between seasons" right now -- the flowers come in April and May, and the black berries ripen later in the year. In the meantime, the leaves are still fresh after the spring rains.

Huckleberries, they look a bit like our blueberries. are they related? never tasted one.

Indeed they are! I just checked a plant encyclopedia, and huckleberries and blueberries are both members of the Vaccinium genus.

I've never tasted a huckleberry, either. Now that I know what they look like, I should keep an eye out for them when I'm on the trails in the hills. The berries are shiny black!
