watching the birds --- #3 of 7

Another colorful bird! This is a Collared Lory (Phigys solitarius), and it's a native of Fiji.

>> better to live outside !!

Most of the animals that I've been showing in my pictures are endangered in the wild. The San Diego Zoo is participating in a captive breeding program to help restore the populations of these animals. A couple of days ago, I posted a picture of a kingfisher that is extinct in the wild.

The San Diego Zoo also has a great educational program in place. They are doing a lot to help raise awareness of environmental problems, and I think that they deserve our thanks.

Fleur the San Diego zoo really set a standard many years ago as "The" zoo in the US.

I feel very fortunate to have the wonderful zoo that we have here in St Louis. It is certainly by far the best zoo I have ever visited. For a number of years (at least the last 3-4) it has been named the #1 zoo in America by both Zagat and Parenting magazines. It certainly doesn't hurt that admission is free!!

They also do extensive work with endangered species - regularly sending back new &/or rehabilitated ones.

As a side note - the Missouri Botanical Gardens (mobot.org) in addition to the Butterfly House do much the same work - even to the extent that there are people working for them on several continents.

>> the St. Louis Zoo and the Missouri Botanical Gardens

Both of those places have been on my must-visit list for ages! I've never spent any great length of time in St. Louis --- even though I have relatives nearby --- and I should rectify that some day.
