The Marvelous Museum, a project by Mark Dion
Oakland Museum of California, 2011

From the museum catalog: "Drawing upon the overlooked orphans, curiosities, and treasures from the collections, conceptual artist Mark Dion has created site-specific installations and interventions throughout the art galleries."

The Oakland Museum of California has an extensive collection of historical artifacts as well as work by California artists, and the donors contribute items such as old farm equipment, automobiles, Hollywood memorabilia, and furniture.

I'll bet that there's a story behind this small raft!

As I remember it, this is one of the sleds from Robert Peary's expedition to the North Pole in 1909, on loan from the American Museum of Natural History.

It could be. However, it also had a "Marvelous Museum" tag so I've included it in my series about that show.

it would be interesting to find out the history behind the "raft or sled"
