Hi wifey, I think I can answer this. The whole Marin coast is a bunch of slices of various kinds of rock, all mixed like a deck of cards. I looked at this notch as we were walking by, and the cliff in front of the camera (the part you can't see) is all serpentine rock, whereas the cliffs on the right and left are sandstone. Serpentine is generally weak and crumbly, and the Pacific surf makes short work of it. Here's what it looks like:
