visiting Old Town, #1
San Diego, California

Monday, January 29, 2007

The Old Town area in San Diego is a California State Park, and there are a lot of museums, historical monuments, shops, historical buildings, and gardens to explore. It's a tourist-oriented area, but it's interesting, too.

These palm trees are near the entrance to the State Park.

I didn't know this for a long time, but there is only one kind of palm tree that is native to Alta California. The so-called California Fan Palm grows wild in only a very small part of the desert area in Southern California and in Baja California, Mexico.

The Canary Island Palm and other kinds of palm trees were introduced by the Europeans who settled Alta California. They also brought the Mexican Fan Palm northward.

I liked this group of trees. They were planted in the early 1900s to create a sort of tropical paradise that doesn't naturally exist in San Diego, and today even that fake Disneyland-type planting is a historical exhibit itself.

I'm so envious..... love the Bay Area but would love to spend some time in San Diego!

The native species is Washingtonia filifera, if memory serves. They are relatively short and squat. The tall fan palms that are so ubiquitous in Southern California are Washingtonia robusta--probably the same as the Mexican ones you mention.

Yes, that's correct -- the California fan palm that I'm talking about and have in my own garden in Oakland CA is Washingtonia filifera.

The Mexican fan palms -- W. robusta -- can get very tall. I remember seeing some at Stanford University that were at least 75 feet (22.86 meters) tall!

PhotoPro, I hear you! This was my first real trip to San Diego.

I've been in the nearby area on a couple of previous trips, but this was the first chance I've had to see the city itself. I'm glad I could get a lot of photos!

Here's an interesting web page:
http://www.sunpalmtrees.com/Cold-Hardy-Palm-Trees.htm

There's more information -- and lots of photos -- about the California fan palm, the Mexican fan palm, and the Canary Island date palm.
