I had no idea what this bird was, Denise identified it as a spotted towhee. I thought it was a young bird. It attracted my attention by "yelling" at me loudly from a big bush as I was walking past. It acted like it couldn't fly yet as it kept hopping about in the bush and chirpping at me. It let me get fairly close and never flew off.
Special picture, Doug! We have Fantails in NZ that will fly close to you in the bush. They are very cheeky and will almost land on you at times. SOmeone told me it is because as we move through the bush we stir up insects and the birds floow us for their dinner.
I prefer to think of them as extra friendly.
