Acorn woodpeckers drill big holes all year and stuff them with acorns for later use. The "community" of birds protects this acorn bank from raiders. There is always a few birds nearby.

Yes, nature always amazes me! Some creatures are so clever. I guess the nuts also attract bugs which the birds eat as well! Can't say it does the tree a lot of good, though!!

They probably use dead wood anyway as its softer to drill.

You are right, I'm sure. Down the river from this spot is an entire tree stuffed with acorns and the one they are nesting in has a lot as well. They definitely are a bitt off from bird normal....
