Yin Lichuan, director of Niu Lang Zhi Nu (Knitting), a Chinese film, AMC Theatre, September 5, 2008. Knitting is about three young people trying to make a living in an unspecified Chinese city.
Yin majored in French and literature at Peking University. She speaks no English, but she speaks Mandarin and French fluently. During the Q&A, some people in the audience asked their questions in Mandarin. Usually she would answer back in Mandarin, and the interpreter would translate her answer to English. But for one question, someone asked the question in Mandarin, Yin gave the answer in French to the Festival programmer, and the Festival programmer translated it into English.
I can't speak Mandarin, so after the screening, I asked her for her autograph in French. She signed my program book. | |
