At 8am on 11 August, the 'bongs' of Big Ben were heard for the last time until September. This is to allow four to six weeks of maintenance work on the clock mechanism. An alternative electric system was installed to keep the clock moving during this period but Big Ben and the quarter bells will be silent. This is the final phase of a programme of planned works prior to the Great Clock's 150th anniversary in 2009.
