It originally had a stone crown, but it fell down in a storm, sorry I can't remember the date. An engineer inspected the tower and discovered that it would no longer support a stone crown, damage from the storm I think. In typical fashion there were them many years of umming and arring over what to do about it before the aluminium structure you see was placed atop of the tower.
