When I lived in San Jose, there were a couple times when fires rushed through the Santa Cruz mountains. A buddy and I figured out that cops and firefighters couldn't both keep up with the moving fire line AND keep people out, so we ventured up behind the fire lines to watch as small fires were being put out. Stupid, of course, as not everything burns, and anything could have flared up, but very exciting to see the helicopters dropping water almost over our heads. Unfortunately, this was pre-camera days for me. Well, I may have had a disk camera, but it broke, thankfully.
this series really strikes home and every year our town of silver city NM os plagued by forest fires and the threat of evacuation. it is a daily sight to see slurry plaines flying over head back and forth. but I will tell you, one of the most beautiful things Ive seen in my life is a mountanous horizon that glowes red with fire in all directions in the middle of the night. its like watching a 360 degree sunrise all through the night.
