New Year's Day/ The Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco. Right under the bridge (left side of photo) is Fort Point. I spent the night there once with a group of 5th graders in1976 and listened to the bridge creek all night. The other side of the bridge is Marin County and the headlands. This shot is for Kosmos. My son did his 5th grade science camp at the Headlines Institute, during one of the wildest weather weeks ever.

I really like that bridge. And I have never seen a photo of it where it looks so cold. From where is this photo taken?

Thanks for the comments. It was taken from the Presidio, on the bay side of the bridge (as opposed to the Pacific Ocean side). Yes, it can be quite chilly in San Francisco, even in the summertime and at the same time hot in other parts of the bay area. The Pacific Ocean current comes down from the north, my dad used to refer to it as the Kamchatka current, coming down from the Russian far east. Even in Los Angeles and San Diego, the ocean water is surprisingly cold. As you go inland and are protected by the mountains, the weather turns warmer and eventually into a desert.
