Bobbitt, William Haywood , state supreme court justice, 910 East Boulevard, Charlotte. Born in Raleigh, North Carolina on October 18, 1900, he is the son of James Henry and Eliza May (Burkhead) Bobbitt.
His elementary education was received in the grade schools of Baltimore, Maryland. He was a student at Charlotte High School, Charlotte, North Carolina, from 1913 to 1917. After graduation from high school in 1917, he entered the University of North Carolina where he was awarded an A.B. degree in 1921. Judge Bobbitt also attended the University of North Carolina School of Law during the school year 1920-21. Since graduation he has been the recipient of the honorary degree of LL.D. from Davidson College in 1953 and from the University of North Carolina in 1957.

His marriage to Sarah Buford Dunlap of Charlotte, North Carolina, took place on February 28, 1924.

The children of Judge and Mrs. Bobbitt are: Mrs. John W. Carter of Morganton, North Carolina; William H. Bobbitt, Jr. of Charlotte; Mrs. Ekkehart Sachtler of Forest Hills, New York; Mrs. D. S. Moss of Enfield, North Carolina.

Judge Bobbitt began his legal career in 1922, having been licensed to practice law on January 30 of that year. Until September 1, 1922, he was associated with the firm of Stewart and McRae. One that date, he became a member of the firm of Parker, Stewart, McRae and Bobbitt until October 1, 1925. From October 1, 1925, until October 1, 1930, Judge Bobbitt was a member of the legal firm of Stewart, McRae and Bobbitt. During these years Judge Bobbitt was admitted to practice in the State Courts of North Carolina, the United States District Court, the United States Circuit Court of Appeals (Fourth Circuit) and the Supreme Court of the United States.

He was elected resident Superior Judge of the 14th Judicial District in 1938 and again in 1946. He served continously as a Superior Court Judge from January 1, 1939 through January of 1954.

Appointed by Governor William B. Umstead as Associate Justice, North Carolina Supreme Court, on Febrary 1, 1954. Judge Bobbitt served under such appointment until the General Election of 1954. In the 1954 General Election, he was elected without opposition to fill the unexpired term of former Associate Justice Barnhill and for a full eight-year term beginning in January of 1955.

His offices in Raleigh are in the Justice Building; his home is in the Boylan Apartments, D-101, Raleigh.

Judge Bobbitt holds membership in the Mecklenburg County Bar Association, the North Carolina Bar Association, the American Bar Association and the American Judicature Society.

From 1933 to 1952 he was a trustee of Brevard College and held the position of President of the General Alumni Association of the University of North Carolina for the year 1954-55.

He is a Past President and Life Member of the Charlotte Civitian Club. In 1947-49, Judge Bobbitt served his state as a member of the North Carolina Commission to Study Imporovement of Administration of Justice in North Carolina

He also rendered public service by being on the North Carolina Judicial Council from 1949 to 1954. Judge Bobbitt is a member of the Democratic political party; and belongs to Dilworth Methodist Church in Charlotte.
