Army Sgt. Philip Dodson Jr.: Dodson and his wife, Melissa, were married in January 1987. She stands 4 feet 7; he stood 5 feet 8. He called her "Ol' short woman." She called him "Baby." Dodson, 42, of Forsyth, Ga., was killed Dec. 2 in a vehicle accident at Tallil Air Base. He was assigned to Forsyth. He worked as a corrections officer in the Georgia prison system for nearly 20 years. He reached the rank of sergeant — the same rank he achieved posthumously in the Guard. Dodson held down a second job at Wal-Mart. "He was a hard worker," Melissa Dodson said. "He felt it was a man's duty to provide for his family, and he did." He liked to spend time with his family, collect guns and knives, and watch westerns and war movies. He also liked to hunt and fish and build things out of wood. "He could do just about anything he wanted to do with wood," his widow said. "It was good craftsmanship. He took his time and did it right." He was a gung-ho Guardsman who often woke his comrades in the morning by standing on a footlocker and hollering the soldier's creed. He also is survived by his daughter, Allison.
