Bobbitt's Fotothing PhotoBlog InfoThing: A championship season. Still spry: Rowena Moore, Lucille Marciniak, Wynette Cook and Minnie Ruth Wood. (Surviving members of the 1935 GA State Champions Basketball Team. Oct. 2003. In a recent interview with Wynette Cook, Lucille (Covin) Marciniak, Rowena Moore and Minnie Ruth Wood, these ladies recalled their Class C District Championship basketball season of 68 years ago. The girls went all they way under the direction of Coach Jacqueline McKenzie and Professor C.O. Lam (fondly known as "fessor" by his students). Minnie Ruth remebers being a rather feisty guard. When the coach asked her to take the place of an all-district teammate named "Mabel", she recalls Mabel throwing the ball really hard at her. "I lit into her," Minne Ruth recalls, and the two wound up fighting on the floor until the coach threatened to take Minnie Ruth out of the game. She also remembers this same Mabel having gone to the beauty parlor before a game and when she arrived to play ball, Professor Lam just tousled her hair with his hand and told her "you can't play ball and look pretty too." That year they beat West Point by a lopsided score and got into a fight afterwards. Minnie Ruth said you could always expect a fight there.
