Pappas, USAF (Ret) died on December 22, 2006. He was a native of Savannah and a graduate of Savannah High School. He received a Civil Engineering degree from the University of Illinois, a Master of Engineering Administration degree from George Washington University and a Doctor of Jurisprudence degree from John Marshall Law School. He was also a graduate of the USAF War College at Maxwell Air Force Base, Alabama. Colonel Pappas entered the service with Battery E (Irish Jasper Greens) 118'" Field Artillery Regiment from Savannah in September 1940. He was commissioned in the Corps of Engineers in 1942. During World War II he served in both the European and the Pacific Theaters of operation. He was also a veteran of the Korean Conflict and the Vietnam War. Following World War II his overseas assignments with the Air Force included Germany, Greece, Korea, Hawaii, Vietnam and Thailand. Colonel Pappas retired at Boiling Air Force Base, D.C. after 32 years service. Colonel Pappas' military decorations include the Legion of Merit, Meritorious Service Medal, Air Force and Army Commendation Medals, Medal for Humane Action (Berlin Airlift), and numerous campaign and service medals. Following military retirement, he practiced as a consulting engineer in Washington, D.C. and returned to Savannah where he practiced as a civil engineer until 1980. Gus Pappas was co-founder of the Saints Constantine and Helen Greek Orthodox Cathedral in Honolulu, Hawaii, in 1963. He was a member of the Air Force Association American Legion Post #36 American Red Cross Board member and volunteer American Society of Civil Engineers, Life member and FASCE Bangkok Rotary Club Boy Scouts of America, Past District Commissioner Chatham Nursing Home Affiliates, Past President Emmaus House Mission, volunteer First Volunteer Regiment of Georgia Goodwill Industries, former Board member Life member of the Military Officers Association of America Melvin Jones Fellow, Lions International Military Order of the World Wars, Chaplain Salvation Army Advisory Board, Past Chairman Savannah Golf Club Savannah Lions Club, Past President Society of American Military Engineers, Past Chapter President Solon Chapter #5, AHEPA, Past President St. Paul's Greek Orthodox Church Parish Council, Past President Veterans of Foreign Wars Gus Pappas will be remembered for his generosity, his wit and his uncanny ability to light up a room. His infectious laughter and warm smile will live in our hearts. He is survived by his wife, Kathryn, and three children, James C. Pappas, M.D. and his wife Renee of Panama City, FL, Mary P. Hough and her husband Steven of Southport, FL and William C. Pappas and his wife Elaine of Bogart, GA. He also is survived by beloved former daughter-in-law, Sandra G. Meredith, three grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Trisagion Prayer Service will be held at St. Paul's Greek Orthodox Church on Tuesday, December 26, 2006 at 6:00 PM. Funeral services will be held at St. Paul's Greek Orthodox Church on Wednesday, December 27, 2006 at 1:00 PM with burial at Bonaventure Cemetery with full military honors.
