Interesting. Is this a real piece of sculpture or some scrap building material left behind on the beach.

Its certainly real. The sculptor is Maggie Hambling and the scallop is made out of steel and is inspired by the operetta "Peter Grimes" by Benjamin Britten who lived most of his life nearby at Snape. Britten created a concert hall at the old maltings in the village and now the internationally famous Aldeburgh Festival takes place there each year.
