I love this things!! Probably because we don't have them where I live. Is this in your garden Barbara, or did you just stumble upon it on one of your outings? It's my understanding that the bulbs are poisonous???

These are growing in my garden Larry, and I love them...they are of the Lily family, and if prepared properly they are used in medication (mainly Chinese) as a cough remedy, but I think you are right, if they are ingested without preparation they are poisonous. The name apparently comes from the Latin for 'dice box' because of the chequered pattern, and it is the county flower of Oxfordshire....
