Some of the work by Maurits Cornelis Escher (1898-1972), an internationally well known dutch artist, was inspired by the Alhambra tiles during his first visit there in 1922.
He was fascinated by the tiles, in which each bit of space in between the motives was used, and changed into another motive. He did the same in the above work of art named 'Water and Sky', where you can see both fish and birds in the spaces in between the fish.
