Marken is een voormalig eiland in de Zuiderzee, tegenwoordig Markermeer dat sinds 1957 via een smalle dam met het vasteland verbonden is. Het behoort tot de gemeente Waterland in de provincie Noord-Holland.
In de dertiende eeuw vestigden zich monniken uit Friesland op het eiland. Hun voornaamste middelen van bestaan waren landbouw en veeteelt. Om zich te beschermen tegen het water werden er dijken rond het eiland aangelegd en werden de woningen op verhogingen gebouwd. In de 14e eeuw waren er regelmatig dijkdoorbraken, waardoor het zoute water weer vrij spel kreeg. De inwoners van Marken gingen zich toeleggen op visserij. De aanleg van de Afsluitdijk in 1932 betekende een eind aan deze bron van inkomsten.
Al meer dan een eeuw is het voormalige vissersdorp een belangrijke toeristische trekpleister. De opvallende klederdracht heeft daaraan bijgedragen.

Marken is a former island in the South Sea, nowadays IJssel Lake, and this part where Marken is situated on is called Marker Lake. Marken is connected to the mainland by a dike since 1957. Marken belongs to the community of Waterland in the province of North Holland.

Monks from Friesland were the first inhabitants of the island in the 13th century. Their main means of existence were agriculture and cattle breeding. To protect themselves against the water dikes were built around the island and a lot of the houses were built upon poles. The water broke through the dikes regularly during the 14th century giving the salt sea water another chance to invade into the island. The inhabitants of Marken from then on became sea fishermen. The realization of the Separation dike in 1932, changing the salt South Sea into the sweet water IJsselmeer lake, put this source of income to an end.

Marken nowadays is an important place for tourists to visit. The traditional costumes that the inhabitants still wear occasionally certainly contributed to the increased tourism. Apart from that the lovely and typical wooden houses make a visit more than worth while.
