Holland - Spaarnwoude - 5,200 years old beach wall
The First Geographical Monument in Northern-Holland

Now that this old beach wall has been given the status of a geographical monument it is protected and it is not allowed to alter it. Because we always need land to build new houses on for our ever growing population, it is expected that Holland will become even flatter than it is now. More attention is paid now, however, to old marks in the landscape telling about the natural way in which it was formed by the forces of nature in a process stretching over millennia and more.

From the Magazine: Geography (2003)
Holland will become even flatter
Author: Henk Leenaers
Translation Anna G.A. Schnitfink
To know that cities like Alkmaar, Haarlem and The Hague are built on old (flattened, added by translator AS) beach walls, and that a city like Haarlem owes its long stretched north-south shape to this, is according to De Gans (Wim de Gans of the Dutch Institute for Applied Geosciences (NITG)) somewhat interesting ('I surprised many inhabitants of The Hague with my explanation why the Laan van Meerdervoort is so long and so straight: it runs over an old beach wall.'), but this does not stir the imagination as much as overlooking a ten meter high sand ridge in flat polderland. That meanwhile makes the last, still pretty untouched, beach wall of Spaarnwoude, so special that the province of Northern-Holland proclaimed it last year (= 2002) to be from then onwards a geographical monument. Many consider the sandbump to be a terp, also because a small church was built on top of it. It is, however, one of the oldest and most eastern situated beach walls of Holland. Some 5,200 years ago the coastline was here. Thereafter the coastline was built up (by the sea, the sand and the wind) in western direction.

Uit het Tijdschrift Geografie (2003)
Nederland wordt nóg vlakker
auteur: Henk Leenaers
