Holland IJmuiden - North Sea Channel
Middle sleuze, the second largest of the four sleuzes was built in 1896.
It is possible to cross the sleuzes by car, (motor)bike or by foot via movable bridges, unless a ship is leaving the sleuze, then you have to wait till the bridge is turned back again.

Making these photos is so nice, Hans. I have to find more info, and learn a lot myself sometimes. I never paid attention to the amount of sleuzes, I always thought it was just three of them. Today I found out that the oldest two (which I thought were one(!)) have got separate names. So the total amount of sleuzes turned out to be four instead of three!!!

the Poolster was large tanker ...last steam driven ship of our Navy ..i ahve sailed her for 3 years !
do you know that the fort wasnt build on a island first ?

Yes, I do. I am and always was fond of history. (My youngest son is a history teacher, works in a different job now. I studied just for pleasure together with him...) As ar as I can recollect Fort island was connected with the main land in the north, but because of the building of fourth and largest sleuze Fort peninsula lost a part of its land and became an island (1929).
