Spain - The Alhambra - Ceiling
Photo 1

The ceilings in The Alhambra palaces are either made out of ceddar wood from Lebanon, laid out in complicated patterns, put together in an astonishing way,
or
they are made out of stunning and also very complicated plaster work.
Both methods give you the sensation to gaze upon a very beautiful, starry sky.

Even in the original, it is difficult to say if this is wood or plaster. Anna, do you know if the Moors are still around Spain in any way. History tells us they occupied Spain from the 8th century until 1492. Did they simple disappear or did they go back to N. Africa?

Dear Larry: thank you for showing interest!
As far as I know the following happened: the catholic kings Ferdinand and Isabella who reconquered Granada inclusive of The alhambra in the year 1492, promised freedom of religion to both the moorish and the jewish inhabitants. Shortly thereafter, however, the moors and the jews were forced to have themselves converted to christianity and baptized, and if not they became persona non grata... Of course if you look at the spanish people you can see that part of the moorish blood runs through their veins and possibly also jewish blood. The majority of the moors and the jews left Spain (and also Portugal) to avoid being converted and baptized. A lot of the jewish people went to Holland, and the majority lived in Amsterdam.
