Wall decoration
Photo 3
This picture shows the various types of wall decoration you can find in The Alhambra.
1. A kind of stalactite decorating the ceiling of the semi dome. Some of the lovely original colours can still be seen.
2. Plasterwork of ground marble and stucco material, partly in stylized arabic characters, worshipping Allah, or containing poetry.
3. Underneath: beautiful tiles in a complicated and very clever pattern.
Please note how the black and white rim consists of similarly shaped tiles.
And mind you: all these exquisite expressions of moorish/arabic/oriental architecture and art were finished well before the year 1492, when the two Spanish roman catholic kings Isabella of Castillia and Ferdinand of Aragon reconquered also the city of Granada and consequently The Alhambra. | |
