Spain - Cordoba
Mosque / Cathedral

On the internet I found this photo - without copyrights - that will give you an excellent idea about this awesome building, and the photo also shows clearly the alterations made to the mosque and to the Bell Tower (= former minaret) after the reconquista of Cordoba upon the moorish rulers in the year 1236.
Legend has it that Carlos V, the kind of united Spain, who consented in the cathedral being 'inserted' into the mosque (1520), later when he saw what was done to this magnificent building, deeply regretted his decision. One cannot help to feel very ambiguous about the mosque/cathedral. I simply love the mosque part of the building, and would have liked it to have been preserved in its original shape. On the other hand, because the cathedral was put in the very centre of the mosque, the building as a whole is still there... Should this not have been the case, it is very likely that the whole mosque would have been destroyed...

Somehwere else on the internet I read that the people of Cordoba still feel very attached to 'their' mosque, even in such a way that they say: 'I went to church in the mosque...' and not: 'I went to church in the cathedral...'
