Dr. Henry D. Cogswell erected a huge monument at Mountain View Cemetery in Oakland, a great granite plinth with a purple glass star at its peak, set in a granite square with four corner sculptures. He was very serious about broadcasting his convictions to posterity.
He endowed a technical college in San Francisco in 1887 that still exists as Cogswell College, in Sunnyvale. A sister institution in Washington state, Henry Cogswell College, closed just last month: http://www.henrycogswell.edu/
A fervid temperance activist, Cogswell erected water fountains across the country, adorned with statues of himself, to give people an alternative to alcohol. One of them, in San Francisco, appears in the Library of Congress site: http://ark.cdlib.org/ark:/13030/tf7x0nb7n2/
