The peak got its name from the soldier-explorer John C. Fremont. In 1846 he so annoyed the Mexican authorities in Monterey that they asked him to leave. He and his men climbed this mountain, then named Gavilan Peak, and built fortifications complete with American flag. The Mexicans let him sit up there for a while, and eventually the American authorities got him to leave. But I was impressed with the sheer energy it took to do all that.
