Haddon Hill has two stairways. One is the famous and elaborate Cleveland Cascade, built in the 1920s and slowly being restored. This is the other one, between Merritt and Beacon Streets. It goes between gracious small apartment buildings with excellent views of Lake Merritt and the Grand Lake district, with the Grand Lake Theater (top center) at its heart. The hill beyond divides the Piedmont Avenue and Grand Lake neighborhoods and is one of Oakland's better places to live if you use a car.

Oh yes, in the middle is I-580, named America's most beautiful urban highway in 1966.
