RFI is now the only annual festival of its kind in Switzerland. Other folklore festivals include the FIFO Festival in Martigny that takes place every other year, the festival in Neuchâtel, and a festival in Zurich that is made up of immigrant folklore groups.
From the start, RFI has given priority to authentic traditional groups, groups that use genuine or faithfully recreated instruments, that do traditional local dances, and that wear costumes that are authentic or recreated as authentically as possible.
Also chosen are groups that have adapted elements of their genuine foklore traditions for shows, which means that traditional melodies have been harmonized and elements of dances and costumes have been modified. These adaptations have been made, however, with priority given to authenticity.
There are groups that have modified elements of folklore to meet the requirements of modern staging. These groups present folklore that is called "stylized" or "reconstructed". As a rule, these groups are not selected by RFI.lore |
