Look like a really interseting place. Desertas Island, is it like a desert? are there any trees there?

Exactly. there's no trees, nor people living there. Some bushes and birds and insects only. Also some sea-wolves living on the coast! There were some indangered species there so The islads Desertas (3 big ones + islets) and the Selvagens islabds (2 big ones + islets) were turned into Natural Reserves in the 50's.
