Snow-capped Mount San Jacinto in the background on a sunny January 2, 2009 day, this hawk has been identified as a red-tailed, although one ranger said it could be a Swainson's. Anyone?

perfect photo, angle within the frame as well as sharp focus, often not possible with the slow response of the digital camera.

Around here we call them "Chicken Hawks". More annoying than anything. The main reason the rabbit and quail population is way down.

I saw one sitting on top of a telephone pole when I made a pit
stop the other day. Going back into the car for the camera was
the signal for the eagle to take off. Bummer

I agree - utterly amazing shot!!!! There are some Sea Eagles that have been re-introduced on the Isle of Mull and it is my ambition to visit and attempt a photo like this - wishful thinking lol

The story behind the hawk shot: I have a friend I call my 'critter gitter' (rattlesnake, black-necked stilt, this hawk, others) who rides with me in our quest for photos of wildlife. We drove along an old dirt road and the hawk startled us when it took off from the fencepost we unwittingly drove by. She kept an eye on it and directed me back to where it had landed on another fencepost. This time I was ready, and prefocused...so when it took off again, I got this shot!
