Unhung doors on a new house being built amongst the ruins of the Santorini “ghost village” of Mesa Gonia. Once one of the most important villages on the island; the village was devastated by the 1956 earthquake and the inhabitants just upped and left moving to the coastal town of Kamari. Some traditional architecture survived and only until recently the ruins remained untouched. Now, slowly, some people are returning and re-building the once bustling little town. It is however, still a place of quiet solitude, contemplation, and fascination with only the odd tourist venturing into the old narrow streets.
