A male Wheatear on Northam Burrows this afternoon. He was busy feeding his family (see later pictures).
Wheatears migrate from Africa arriving in Britain in early March, returning south in August - just think how far this little bird has flown to get here!
The name 'wheatear' has nothing to do with 'wheat' or 'ears' - it is a corrupted form of 'white rump' as these birds show a flash of white as the fly off.
