I spent the weekend working on an archaeological site at Little Potheridge, North Devon. The site is the location of a clay pipe kiln where clay pipes would be made and fired using local Marland clay. The pipe maker was John Pearn or Parn (you can see his mark on some of the pipes we found) - his pipes have been found as far away as in America. The pipes shown were made 1700 - 1750. Bideford had strong early links with the Tobacco trade and strong links to the early settlements in New England.
