The Ponte Sant' Angelo was originally built between 134 and 139 AD under the Emperor Hadrian. More recently Bernini supervised the remodelling of the bridge which has always been one of the main pilgrim routes towards the Vatican and St Peters. The bridge now has twelve statues lining it, ten angels holding instruments of the passion and two apostles.
This statue is by Cosimo Fancelli and shows an angel bearing Veronica's veil.
