My entry for reflectionthursday : Reflections at Fremington Quay, North Devon.
The structure behind the old railway bridge (the bridge now carries the Tarka Trail cycle path) is a lime kiln - these were used to burn a mixture of coal and limestone to produce fertiliser for the fields. These kilns are situated at many places around the North Devon coast as both the coal and limestone were brought in by sea across the Bristol Channel from South Wales.
