Path leading to the Ridgeway from Avebury, this section is known as the "herepath" from the Old English word "here" meaning army, the path being wide enough for an army to march along. Armies were smaller then!
The Ridgeway is thought to be around 5,000 years old making it one of the oldest roads in continuous use in the world. For more details see: http://www.nationaltrail.co.uk/Ridgeway/
