My entry for gatefriday : Lych gate at the Church of St James, Chawleigh, Devon. A lych gate is a roofed church gate through which coffins were carried for burial (see : http://www.facebook.com/pages/Lichgate/111072398944080?sk=wiki).
What is curious about this gate is the way it opens - the two cross bars and the central vertical piece fold up to the right, you then step through the gap before refolding the gate behind you - does anyone know the name for this type of gate mechaism?

This is a great entry, when I saw the FunFriday theme I was sure I would see at least one Lych gate, they are so interesting. This one especially so, the gate is very unique, I have never seen one like it before and don't know what it is called, or what the mechanism is called.

Interesting to see the actual gate! So many lych-gates are actually just a roofed archway.

Thor, I'm wondering if you know the name for this type of gate mechanism, and this is a quiz, or if you are wondering the name of the mechanism? It might be categorically called a scissor gate of the vertical type, but I don't know the actual name of the mechanism. Most scissor gates that I see are horizontal.

Maybe next time you are in the neighborhood, you could replace the missing nut and screw/bolt in the top center strap.

Its not a quiz Larry I am really stumped!
The best bet might be to ask someone in the area (deserted when I was there) or there may even be some historical literature in the church which might help.
