Anemone coronaria 'St Piran'.
This flower used to be widely grown all over Cornwall as a cut flower crop.
Many small holdings used to grow it & hundreds of boxes were sent to the large wholesale markets at Covent garden & Bristol on the goods trains every spring day.
Now 95% of the flowers sold at these markets are air freighted at great expense to the enviroment from all over the world.
Today is Earth day so next time you buy a bunch of flowers please consider how far & how much they have cost the earth & try & buy local.

I usually buy a cheap bunch when I'm in London as thanks to my sis in law, we have 2 flower farms nearby and I see the flowers go off by fridge van each night. I also watch the girls behind the stalls at Embankment or Waterloo, making up £15 bouquets from flowers they paid pence for!

Anemones are among my favourite flowers and it's great to see so many at once in this great photo, but I'll bear your environmental message in mind next time I'm tempted to buy a bunch. Better start growing my own!
