I've never heard of "Cotton Grass." Is this a 'crop' of it that will be harvested or just a field of voluntary Cotton Grass?

Not a crop . . .Fluffy, cotton-like flower and seed heads give this distinctive plant its name. However, as a member of the sedge family, its technically not a grass at all.
Common in wet moorland as is the case here. Flowers from May to June. After such a wet winter last year it seemed to thrive.

Thanks for that information Simon. I'm endlessly curious.
