18. and just four German graves. We were told that most of the German casualties were repatriated whereas the allied forces buried their dead in the field of conflict. Indeed the numbers were so great, I can't imagine how it could have been otherwise managed.

Did you go to a German cemetery? Lines and lines of stark metal crosses. While the British tried to turn their cemeteries into 'gardens from home', the Germans' approach was to show the stark cruel reality.

No, I didn't realise there were any - but having just looked it up I found this, the only German cemetery in the Ypres Salient.
