For Pinko - Sheila playing harp. Taken several years ago in Trinity College, Cambridge. I don't play much at the moment. Problem with my shoulder..... but it is a beautiful thing to be fortunate enough to have in my home.

Hi Coldfire - there are 47 strings on a harp like mine. They should be tuned regularly (every day if you can) by adjusting the tuning pegs you can see in pic no 3. To put a new string on, you thread it through the little hole in pic no1 and stretch it up and round the tuning peg.

Beautiful image of what could be interpreted as a moment of solitude for the musician. Evokes a feeling of calmness even without the music!

Somehow I'd never before realised that one leans the harp on one's shoulder to play it. Since the instrument is obviously fairly heavy, I can see why shoulder problems could be limiting. So what notes are the 47 strings tuned to?

for Tony - it's tuned to all the notes starting at C at the bass of the piano range and going up to G at the top of the piano range. They are all tuned in their flat position - don't ask me why, too technical - I'm a cellist really!!

for Tony (2) - it probably shouldn't lean on your shoulder but I'm too short and plump for it to do anything else! And I'm not an accomplished harpist so I probably don't have the right technique!

I adore harps. One of those instruments I truly wish I could play.

...and the piano, guitar, flute, violin, double bass and she sings - but Sheila will probably be too modest to tell you. :-)

Ah, of course...that would be the logical tuning, and the pedals set the key signature, so to speak. Thanks for the explanation. Beautiful instrument!
